As for Chicago! It quite takes my breath away. Rather a change from Winchester and Boston! As rather, Boston as seen from the virtuous and Bostonian eye.

Drove down town by Michigan Ave. Buildings astonishingly fine, many strict copies of buildings of the old world. Notably Higinbotham Mansion, on Michigan & 29th, [[strikethrough]] and the [[/strikethrough]] taken after some German castle, severe & fine in style, and the case house, Michigan Ave. of "Cluny" architecture, very beautiful.

The house on Prairie Ave. is principally made of stones

brought from a New Hampshire farm wall, that the owner built himself when a boy, now a rich man. A very good idea, and typical of the Chicago millionaire who is boastful in the last degree, & cares more for his rise in wealth and the show of it than for the actual delight of the things it brings within his reach. The fine architecture is without doubt a sham in most cases, as regards the taste of the inmates, who have chosen the best known architect & estimate the beauty by the cost.
