Everything in a mess at Mlle. Rougier's, Madame R's husband & son trying to get money out of Jean (who holds all the property) & a case of blackmail, saying that Jean supports an individual (Alice) & spends money on her.

Mlle Vovuz & the Pierremonts (Mlle R's sisters & husband) in a conspiracy also to take the occasion to estrange Mlle. Rougier from Alice.

No communication between them & Mlle. R. in a fearful state. Travelling in the south of France.

Alice does not worry at all about Mlle. R.!

It is strange.

Alice is much in love with Marie Falcogano!

There is something between Alice & Jean in jealousy.

her and it is weird to see Alice so happy & gay even. More like herself than all last winter

Thursday.  Mr. & Mrs. Vinton met Alice at the studio. Mr. V condescending at first but immediately  "eprit" & at last completely gone on her. Mrs. V cross I think because I had invited Adelaide too.

I remarked to Adelaide that she had introduced me to none of her guests at the tea & she turned to Mrs. V & said in a low tone that it was unfortunate to have anyone pour for you who didn't know people.

It was certainly poor taste to expose myself to such icy sentiments.

I would like to find the thing that isn't useless.
