13TH AIR FORCE COMMANDER HERE

Brigadier General William L. Lee, Commander of the U.S. 13th Air Force based in the Philippines, arrived in Taipei at 12:20 p.m. yesterday for a scheduled 24-hour visit to Free China.

Lee, accompained by a party of 14, is now on his second visit to this island bastion of Taiwan since he took over command of the U.S. 13th Air Force. Lee's deputy commander, Brigadier General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., is the new chief of the U. S. air task force in Taiwan.

Lee told reporters at the airfield that his current visit here was connected with no particular mission. He said he came here to meet and confer with the new commander of his air task force Brigadier General B.O. Davis, Jr. The task force, formerly under the control of the U.S. 5th Air Force, was recently switched to that of the 13th Air Force with its headquarters on Taiwan. Brig. Gen. Davis who arrived last June 10 was named the new commander.

Lee talked with U. S. Ambassador to China Karl Rankin in the afternoon and later conferred with high American and Chinese officers here. He also went to suburban Taipei for a brief inspection of U. S. air force units.

The commander of the U.S. 13th Air Force is returned to his Clark Field at 1 m.m. today.
