were intimately associated with the early history of Ohio, were living in a comfortable log cabin on the Adena property in Chillicothe waiting for the completion of their permanent home.

In 1803 the house with its grounds was planned by Latrobe, who designed the great Baum house in Cincinnati, which we have just seen. The house at Adena was built of stone and considered to be the finest house in the Ohio Valley.

[[underlined]] 75. [[/underlined]] The garden lay to the east of the house and was terraced. Stone walls held the terraces and stone steps led from one to another.

The slide shows one of the original retaining walls and steps leading to a section of the present garden which follows the old plan.

Marietta was not settled until the late years of the 18th century. The Mills Garden, which is known to have been planted in 1814, is still cared for and treasured, though the years have made many changes.

[[underlined]] 77. [[/underlined]] The formal garden with its small box bordered beds in the manner of the early 19th century, lies to the side of the house and is approached by a terrace as the land slopes steeply from the building.
