[[underlined]] GARDEN OF MILES BREWTON HOUSE [[/underlined]] in Charleston

[[red dot]] [[underlined]] 47 [[/underlined]]. The garden of the Miles Brewton House is at present in the old city where many changes have largely curtailed the extensive grounds that once formed the gardens.

The beautiful old ^[[(]] house was built about 1760,and considered by many architects an outstanding example of the period; it looks out upon the garden to the south and west, ^[[)]] and [[underlined]] as [[/underlined]] is always met with in gardens of this period, the garden door, opposite the street entrance, was on axis with the main path of the garden. Although the architect of the house is known we do not know who planned the garden, but it is more than probable that the grounds were planned as a setting for the house.

Varieties of roses well known in the 18th century and old style bulbs still bloom and flourish. [[strikethrough]] Though the great days are past the garden and beautiful house have much to interest visitors. [[/strikethrough]]

[[underlined]] The Plan [[/underlined]]
^[[SKIP]]
[[red dot]] [[underlined]] 48 [[/underlined]]. The plan shown in [[strikethrough]] our next [[/strikethrough]] ^[[this]] slide was drawn from the lay-out that survives; it has some of the characteristics of the plans that were followed early in the 19th century, but it may follow the original plan with slight modifications. The garden today is on one level and surrounded with protecting walls.
