City Attorney Richard Ramsey said the State Highway Department had set the requirement as a condition of accepting the street as eligible for state gas tax money for maintenance. The Council earlier had classified the street as a major city street, and included it in a request for state funds.

He said the width obtained by banning parking on one side would give the street the width required by the state for a major city street. The street is a 50-foot right of way for most of its length.
