AVIATOR'S FACE ALWAYS SMILING WHILE HE FLIES

[[image - portrait photograph of Wiseman]]
[[caption]] FRED J. WISEMAN, AVIATOR [[/caption]]

Here we have the fighting face of Fred J. Wiseman, one-time expert auto racing driver and present holder of aviation and speed records on the Pacific Coast, who is this afternoon to ascend from Tacoma baseball park and fly over various sections of the city. At the hour of going to press the big Curtiss-Farman-Wright biplane of Wiseman's own construction had been wheeled from its shed and the mechanicians were tuning up the engine for its work.

Wiseman smiles always when he starts his flights and when he alights the smile is even broader – besides, it is safer to smile at that time. If conditions are right Wiseman will make a flight over Puget Sound, hovering over the monitor Cheyenne.

The flight this afternoon is guaranteed and another flight will be made at the baseball park at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The machine has been at the park since Tuesday and everything was in tiptop condition for the start of the flight today.

AVIATION MEET WILL BE THE ATTRACTION
Crawford's Band Will Play at Fair Grounds Sunday, Instead of at Sumach Park

In order that there may be no counter attraction in the city to detract from the interest in the aviation meet at the fair grounds, W. L. Steinweg has decided not to charge any admission price at Sumach park next Sunday, and Crawford's band, which was to have played there, will join in the entertainment Sunday at the fair grounds.

While the roller skating, canoeing and other features of the park will be running as usual, there will be no baseball game in the afternoon. In view of the unusual attraction that will be provided in the flights of the man-bird, nothing else will be sprung to shift the scene of interest from the fair grounds.

AVIATOR DISCUSSES EFFECT OF FLYING
Fred L. Wiseman Disagrees With Scientists Who Assert That "Man's Body Will Become Covered With Down."

That flying will effect the mental processes was the assertion of Fred L. Wiseman, aviator of national repute, yesterday, who will give exhibitions here Friday and Saturday. Much has been said by scientists as regards the physical metamorhpois which they expect centuries of flying will make in humankind. But it was regarding the mental phase that the aviator expressed himself.

Mr. Wiseman was inclined to laugh at the scientific theory of the enlargement of the heart by centuries of flying and the suggested growth of a soft down over the body, as well as the supposed development of a double process of breathing. In these theories Mr. Wiseman believes that scientists have stepped a little over the boundary of possibility. He earnestly declared his strong belief in a change in the mental processes, however, including spiritual as well as physical development.

He thinks the physical makeup of man is bound to be effected, but in a different way than those who have given the world their ideas on the subject.

The play of the muscles in guiding machines of the air is unlike that required for any other work, he says, and while demanding strength develops the body differently. Mr. Wiseman cites the change that has taken place in himself since he first took up aerial navigation two and a half years ago. Formerly he was a mechanic, strong and robust. Today he is more slender, and while very strong does not appear muscular.

"The delicate, light, but strong movements required in aviation," he said, "transforms the body. While the spiritual side of life do not appeal to the average person today, one cannot sail often in the air without being forced to a different train of thought. The beauties presented to the sight from high altitudes are so much vaster and greater than anything else that has been given us to enjoy that there is left to the aviator room for deep thought, which finally leads him to a very different, more hopeful and happier view of life."

BUSINESS WOMEN TO MEET.

The Tacoma Business Women's club will hold a regular meeting this evening in the Woman's Shop on C street, near 12th. The club has a number of important matters in regard to civic beautifying work, dahlia culture and and rose show exhibits to take up, and for that reason it has been urged by Mrs. Edyth Tozier Weatherred, the president, that a good representation of members be present. Arrangements will probably be made for a large open meeting later on in the season.
