Calbraith P. Rodgers, the first man to fly across this or any other continent, was induced to attempt the wonderful feat by the offer of William Randolph Hearst to pay $50,000 to the first man to make the flight.

But there was a time-limit string to Hearst's offer, and Rodgers failed to cover the distance within the limit, although his average actual speed was high. And Hearst, having obtained a great free advertisement for himself at the expense of Rodgers–including the latter's disastrous fall in his attempted flight from Pasadena to the ocean–has pulled the string and pocketed the purse.

In lieu of the cash, the proprietor "of the longest leased wire" has extended Rodgers a loving cup, which the unfortunate aviator contemptuously refuses to accept.

"Bill Hearst," says the flyer, "had better sell his loving cup and put the money in his self-advertising fund."
