[[image - black and white photograph of Fred J. Wiseman sitting in pilot position of biplane]]

BUT STILL he was first air mail pilot, Fred J. Wiseman, 70, 1817 Oxford St., Oakland, built this plane in 1911 and - believe it or not - flew it from Santa Rosa to Petaluma in 12 minutes, 20 seconds with letters from characters in Santa Rosa to characters in Petaluma. Paul Garber of Smithsonian Institute says he nosed out by one day a similar flight made in India.
