The low, flat swamp country of southern Florida includes great open ^[[sandy]] marshes, flat [[strikethrough]] and sandy [[/strikethrough]] firm when dry, wet and soft [[strikethrough]] when wet [[/strikethrough]] in the rainy season. The marshes are miles in extent and generally higher than the densely timbered swamp areas that surround ^[[or cut through]] them. In a wet time the water may be 4 or 5 inches deep on the marshes and four or five feet deep in the swamps.
