Scattered over the great marsh prairies are numerous [[underlined]] hammocks [[/underlined]], slightly higher and dryer than the marshland and densely covered with palms, palmettos, myrtle and other shrubs and trees. Some of the highest have slash pines and live oaks.

Near the coast the everglades run into endless tidewater inlets buried in mangrove swamps ferns, catbriars and a tangle of strange trees and bushes and vines.

The whole country is but a few feet above sea level and the tide keeps chasing back and forth in the bayous and ditches and the water as well as soil carries more or less salt.
