Continued on Ft. Defiance a large Navaho trading point then to the Navaho sawmill at [[space]], then 7 miles beyond [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] and camped at Fluted Butte, a volcanic neck of crude basalt.

Found much fossil wood at camp, plenty of [[??]] Woodpeckers and acorn trees.

Dozens of yellow pines peeled for food by Indians long ago. I counted 12 from one spot near camp and could have counted 100 near camp.

Saw a little brown bat after daylight and nearly caught it. A bear had been turning over stones. No coyote tracks
Abert squirrels common.
