[[underlined]] July 14 [[/underlined]] - Canyon de Chelly

Took the Park Ranger, Tom Austatt, as guide up Canyon de Chelly to the White House cliff dwelling where he gave a good talk on the archeology of the canyon.

The canyon is 540 feet deep and the white house is at and near the bottom.

There is no surface water but there is plenty of good water 2 or 3 feet below the broad level sand bed. There are about 200 known village sites in the canyon. A good horse trail has been cut down to Whitehouse

Lunched at top and went to [[strikethrough]] abund [[/strikethrough]] Monument Canyon about 10 miles up where we could drive within half a mile of the rim and took Chee Woodie, an educated Navaho as a guide to the rim.
