Columbia City resident Bill Jones loves his airplanes, having devoted a lifetime of service and dedication to various aeronautical endeavors.
recently, those efforts were honored with not one, but two separate award presentations.
Jones received the prestigious Exceptional Service Award from the Air Force Association, one of only five people in the Great Lakes region and 46 nation-wide to receive it.
He was nominated by Col. Tom Eisenhuth, a B-52 pilot now serving as the AFA state president. Jones was presented the national award at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis on Nov. 20.
Jones previously received the Medal of Merit in 2001, a prerequisite to being considered for the Exceptional Service Award.
The former Air Force sergeant, who is credited with photographing atomic bomb destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan during WWII also received the Hoosier Air Museum Service Award.
The award was presented to Jones on Dec. 13 in recognition of his continued dedication and personal sacrifice on behalf of the Hoosier Air Museum, as well as efforts and commitment to the relocation and display of the Wings of Freedom collection from Huntington to its new home.
Jones is a life member and a member of the museum's board of directors.
The Hoosier Air Museum is located near the DeKalb County Airport in Auburn and is the largest privately-owned aviation museum in Indiana.
