Just as we were about to begin a long distance phone search for him, the telegraph operator from the Delaware Lackawanna & Western RR station in Great Bend came came over to the train with a telegram from Scranton saying an aviator named Rodgers had landed there and wanted to know: "Where in hell is the Erie R.R.?" We heaved another sigh of relief and wired Cal to follow the line of the DLW to Great Bend where we would wait for his hundred - mile detour, the plane and train proceeded to Elmira NY.

As Cal neared Elmira, his plane developed motor trouble. The magnetic plugs became loose.
