All biplanes, with the exception of the G. Wright, are of the rigid type using ailerons to obtain lateral stability. The construction is the strongest I have seen in any country. All main braces, spars and uprights are of steel tubing; heavy cable is used for wiring. From all information obtainable, the Army has about 300 pilots, 400 airplanes and 25 dirigibles. They instruct their own pilots.
In order to promote aviation, both in the service and among civilians, a national aviation fund has been raised and is delivered in prizes each year to the winners of certain specified flights. This fund was raised by voluntary subscription. A large portion of the fund goes for reliability prizes. To every German flyer, on a German machine with a German or foreign engine, who remains an hour in the air, not in competition, is given 50 pounds, and for each further consecutive hour another 50 pounds; if with a passenger an additional 25 pounds. This holds good from March 1 and December 12, 1914. This income the pilot holds until his record is beaten, but his receipts in any case many not exceed 500 pounds. The national flying prize is offered to aviators flying under the above conditions for the longest distance across country for twenty-four hours. The distance must no be less than 312 miles, the prize consisting of a monthly payment of 150 pounds, not exceeding 750 pounds altogether or until such time as the winner is beaten in a similar
