Possibly several ships would appear, change their course, make demonstrations and a variety of things, which, against untrained air troops, would completely throw them off. When the hostile ship moved into the outer AAA zone, fire was commenced whether the ship was seen or not, as it arrived in the light zone all the fixed lights were put on at once and the tracking lights picked up the ship, the pursuit aviation having seen the target dived on it with full engine. Should the hostile ship pass or elude the night pursuit, it still had to pass the balloon barrage and gun barrage. Although ineffective in keeping hostile attack away it was the best organisation possible and still is. In the day time the system functioned in a similar manner except that the balloon barrage was lowered, the searchlights did not function, and the pursuit was pushed out to the outer cannon line.

In these days the aerial torpedo, the gliding bomb and the massed air attack, persons must not be deluded into thinking these methods are effective, as all of them can be easily counteracted by an alert and effective air force.
