by the Spaniards. They call the language "Chamorro", the name of the aboriginal inhabitants. It is a Malaysian tongue similar to Visayam. These men should make pretty good soldiers.

4. There is a Marine aviation detachment composed of about eighty men under a Captain Davis, and six pilots. Captain Davis was ill at the time of my visit and I was taken in hand by Captain Williams who showed me everything he had during my short visit. The detachment is quartered in frame buildings for the personnel and stores. The labor used is almost entirely that of the troops. They had only two HS flying boats. These were very old but they were in good shape. With these they met our vessel and escorted it into the harbor. They handled these old boats pretty well. They had two F5L boats, but these were smashed up by a typhoon. One of their little training ships had its fuselage come apart in the air but the pilot came down before it entirely separated. They are having a great deal of trouble with all their wood in the planes which is very susceptible to dry rot in addition to the usual tropical effects on wood. All construction for the tropics should, of course, be of metal. Their hangar was once the ordinary steel girder, iron top affair. Now, after one typhoon, it looked much as if it had been attacked by "Cooper" bombs, a good deal like a pepper pot. I doubt if any of the ordinary hangars can hold where typhoons are prevalent.
