Dogras. - These are of the Rajput caste, second only to the Brahmans, and are descended from the original invaders of India.  They are very honest, docile, and obedient, and are reputed to be good fighters.

Garhwalis. - These people come from about one hundred miles north of Delhi.  They are Hindoos.  They were used in Europe during the World War.

Gurkhas. - These are the subjects of Nepal, an independent state on the north eastern frontier of India.  They look very much like Filipinos.  I have always considered them the best material for soldiers in India.

Hazaras, Jats, and Kumaonis. - These inhabit the northern part of India where most of the fighting tribe reside, while the Madrasis, divided by religion into Mohammedans, Hindoos, and Christians, come from the south end, while very intelligence, make poor soldiers.

Maharatas. - These at one time were the dominant people of India.  They are Hindoos and still furnish many troops for the
