SIAM.

1. from India I proceeded to Siam via Penang, Straits Settlements. This fine harbor and city have been developed very greatly within the last twenty years and the city is one of the pleasantest places in which to live in the Far East. Its importance has been enhanced by the construction of railways, that lead from the mainland opposite the island to Singapore and to Siam. these are all state railways on the Straits Settlements side and belong to that country and on the Siamese side, to Siam. The se railways are four foot gauge and have excellent equipment and fine service throughout.

2. We arrived at [[strikethrough]]Siam[[/strikethrough]]Bankok on April 10, 1924, and were met in an appropriate manner by the American Chargé d'Affaires and representatives of the king and of the Siamese army. With the exception of the small state of Sarawak in Borneo, Siam is the only absolute monarchy left in the world. It is built up around the delta of the Menan River and, like Burma, is a great rice plantation and teak wood lumber yard. In fact, the principal products of Siam are rice, teak, silk, and ducks' eggs, while precious precious stones in the form of sapphires and others of like nature, are mined extensively.
