expanded, again so far the effect was largely moral on the area supposed to be protected. Then came the application of night pursuit aviation, and a thorough realization that the only power capable of stopping hostile aircraft was aviation itself. So, the anti-aircraft were handled entirely as an auxiliary of air power. The best defense was a vigorous effense against the enemy's air force whether it was in the air or on the ground and no more energy was wasted in the passive defense of a locality than was called for by a variety of causes, one of the principal ones being political exigency. 

GROUND DEFENSE

The ground defense was organised as follows: a central tracing board was maintained at the headquarters of the air command. From this radiated a liaison system to all listening posts, airdromes, anti-aircraft cannon and machine gun posts, and search-light positions.
