requires a knowledge of aerial navigation and the use of navigation instruments. Since the effective use of the air force requires operations one hundred miles or more to sea in all directions, navigation problems similar to the following arise:

(a) Continuous knowledge of one's exact location so that pin-point of self or enemy can be radioed to base.

(b) Ability to fly from field and intercept an enemy reported moving from a certain pin-point with a certain direction and speed.

(c) Ability to fly to a certain pin-point and patrol a given area for a reported enemy or fallen plane and return to field.

2. Navigation Methods to use.

For the short distances required, navigation by dead reckoning is sufficiently accurate. The instruments needed for this purpose are listed in Section II. While navigation by sextant observations is not needed in these operations, the training it provides for long distance navigation of the near future makes it worth while to study and practice.
