In the Technical Section a great deal of effort is being devoted to the study of full scale models of airplanes. They are constructing a large wind tunnel and are attempting to standardize values for the measurement of air pressures on aerofoils so that comparative readings between different tunnels will give some result.
In their Research Department they are making a great study of means of preserving wood and fabric and a minute study of metals for airplane construction. A careful study is also being made of navigation instruments for flying in fog and clouds.
In their Department of Fabrications, the greatest attention is being given to metal construction. The French, of course, are way behind the Germans in metal construction, and are now attempting to catch up. They have prototypes of a great many different classes of airplanes in metal or of composite construction - partly metal and partly wood. The outside dimensions of all their ships are very good, but their interior construction is somewhat complicated and difficult to construct in series. Their single seaters are certainly the fastest in Europe, and their models for bombardment airplanes are good. Their two-seaters appear to be only fair. However, they have by far the greatest number of ships under study at the present time of any country in the world.
