lent [[excellent]] water tanks for testing their models. these have traveling bridges over them, and also round tanks where motion in a circle is given to the models. As a result of these things, the seaplanes we saw in Italy were certainly the best in Europe.
the Italians have done very little work with turbo compressors for high altitudes. Although they have studied to some extent the question of fuel injection and heavy oil engines to prevent fires, actually very little has been done on account of the lack of funds.
Their bomb development is very interesting. their shapes have been worked out very well. it will be remembered that the Italians did a great deal of bombardment work during the War, particularly with airships at long distances. Their airship bombardment, in which very few losses were incurred, forms a very interesting study of how this class of aircraft can be used for that purpose. they are working no with bombs that have delayed action fuse of several hours, so that they may be dropped in an area which is to be put out of business, and these projectiles will keep exploding for hours after the airplanes have departed. they can be so timed that one will explode say every fifteen or twenty minutes, three, four, or even ten hours after the airplanes have left, and, if touched or deranged during this time, will explode at once.
