In the 4th Corps Group at Ourches were the 8th, 135th, 90th American (the 8th and 133th were D.H.4-Liberty: the 90th was Salmson) and 1 French squadron.

The 5th Corps Observation Group consisted of the 88th, 99th and 104th American squadrons (all Salmsons), at Souilly.

The Corps Air Service of the 2nd Colonial Corps consisted entirely of French squadrons and was located at Dumont and Belrain, northeast of Bar-le-duc.

About September 1, the Wing Commander of the Corps Observation was appointed and established his office at Toul.  Under the C.A.S. Fir et Army, he was charged with the command of all observation squadrons and groups assigned to army corps.

During the period of preparation dawn and twilight visual reconnaissances, photographic missions, artillery adjustments and exercises with the infantry and artillery were carried out.  In the attacks of the 12th and 12th command planes, infantry contact patrols and artillery surveillance mission kept the command informed as to the general progress.
