The First Pursuit Group (27th, 95th, 95th, and 147th Squadrons) was at Saints, working over the Chateau Thierry front following the successful issue of the operations in that sector. [St was ordered to Renebec Court]This group, formed between April 29th and May 31st, in the Toul Sector, began its initial operations on April 14th, on which date the 94th Squadron destroyed two enemy airplanes over the airdrome at Toul. Its training continued in this sector until June 27, 1918, when between that date and the 29th it was shifted to the Chateau Thierry region for the expected German offensive. During the period of preparation, the crushing of that offensive, which took place on July 15th, 1918, the preparation for the Allied counter offensive on July 18th the counter offensive from Soissons to Chateau Thierry and the consequent retreat of the Germans to the line of the Vesle and later to the Aisne, the work performed by this group was most excellent and was ideal preparation for the forthcoming St. Mihiel operations
The Second Pursuit Group (13th, 22nd, 49th and 139th Squadrons) was stationed at Toul, having been organized between June 5th and August 15th. Its active operations had been limited to patrols over that sector, and the group had not yet experience under battle conditions. As a consequence, it entered the St. Mihiel operation without previous experience in open warfare.
The Third Pursuit Group (28th, 93rd, 103rd and 213th Squadrons) was also stationed in the Toul Sector at Vaucouleurs, having been organized between August 7th and September 3rd, with the 103rd Squadron, formerly the LaFayette Escadrille, as a basis. The experience of the 103rd Squadron fitted it well for its role of instructor in the group. ^[and it was in excellent shape for use in battle.] and consequently upon the entrance of the group into the St. Mihiel operation it was able to acquit itself most creditably.
