place in the Toul Sector from April, 1918, until the latter part of June and the first of July, when they were transferred to the Chateau Thierry sector. The German pursuit in the latter area was very numerous, and as a consequence, the units were compelled to work under the most sever conditions. However, they could have received no training which would have been of more benefit preparatory to their entrance into the St. Miniel operations. On July 25th, the 88th Squadron was relieved from the group and assigned to the Third Corps. From that date until the concentration for the St. Mihiel Battle at which time the 50th Squadron was assigned to it, all missions for the group were carried out by the xxx 1st and 12th Squadrons.

The Fourth Corps Observation Group (8th, 90th, and 135th Squadrons and Photo Section No. 4) was also located in the Toul area, stationed at Ourches, having been organized between June 1st and August 15th. Every opportunity had been taken advantage of to work with the divisions stationed in this sector.

The Fifth Corps Observation Group (99th and 104th Squadrons) was located in the Belfort area stationed at Luxeiul. It had been undergoing organization and training since June 1st. The 104th was just completing its organization. The work of the group as a unit began with this battle.

With the exception of the First, Second and Fourth Balloon Companies, which were located in the Chateau Thierry region where they had done excellent work during the operations in that area, all American ballon companies had been operating and receiving training in the Toul and Baccarat Sectors.

Practically the only American Air units that had to be moved in order to take position for the battle were those in the Chateau Thierry area.
