(Bold) Gen. Hinds Expects No Action.
Maj. Gen. Ernest Hinds, commander of the 8th Corps Area, had not read Col. William Mitchell's statement in which he took the Army and Navy Departments to task for recent aircraft disasters, he said tonight.
"Col. Mitchell has issued many statements in the past criticizing these departments and unless he has gone much further than heretofore, I do not expect any disciplinary action," Gen. Hinds said.
"I do not expect any word from the War Department with reference to Col. Mitchell's case tonight, even if there should be occasion for communication with me at all. Should there be a decision to take disciplinary action, or to investigate the authenticity of Col. Mitchell's purported statement, it is unlikely that I would receive orders before 10 or 11 o'clock Sunday morning.
"Only in cases of emergency, where business is of the utmost importance, are orders communicated to me by the War Department at night, and it is not likely that Col. Mitchell's statement is off sufficient moment to warrant this."
Customary procedure in investigation of cases similar to the one involving Col. Mitchell would be for the War Department to request Gen. Hinds to substantiate the authenticity of the statement as carried in press dispatches and make recommendations, after which the department would consider the necessity of taking disciplinary action, Gen. Hinds said.
"So far, I have not read Col. Mitchell's purported statement, nor have I had any word from the War Department," he concluded
