[[/cartoon]] GRIDIRON CLUB ROASTS NOTABLES Congress, Cabinet Officers, Mitchell and Dawes Few of Victims. The Gridiron Club, that care-free congregation of Washington newspaper correspondents, dusted off its famous emblem last evening, brought it to the sizzling temperature and then proceeded to its annual custom of "roasting," before the very eyes of the "victims," the outstanding public figures of the year, President Coolidge, illy Mitchell and all. Gathering about the banquet board at the Willard Hotel, the members of the club juggled the high representatives of the executive and legislative branches of the Nation on their famous gridiron of wit and nonsense, to the wholehearted amusement of a distinguished company of guests, including the President, Vice President Dawes, cabinet officers, diplomatic officials and business and industrial leaders. The Mitchell court-martial showed immediate uncertainty whether the colonel or the War Department was on trial. Counsel for the air officer admitted he was Representative Reid of Illinois and was selected as counsel because of his record in the "Air Service," but in Congress rather than in the Army. It developed that the colonel was charked with "parking overtime in the newspapers," whereupon the case was ordered referred back to the court of original jurisdiction, the press, with counsel for the accused shouting, "Oh, boy, lead us to it!"
