Samuel Thuggard one of Alma' boy friends was a graduate of St Augustine's in North Carolina from Fayetville, N.C. When Alma met him ^[[about 1910 or 1911 (she was then about 19 yrs old)]] he had just received the position [[of?]] a railway mail clerk (considered in that day as very good [[strikethrough]] for a [[/strikethrough]] job for a Negro). His run was between as I remember from Faytville to Washington D.C.

He was introduced to Alma by an old friend of the family, Patrick Mitchell, who worked this run also. (Faytville N.C. to Washington, D.C.

Sam (as he was called) was her admirer for a number of years and wanted to marry her, but [[strikethrough]] one [[/strikethrough]], because he lived in Fayteville, N.C. in the southland, wheere he wanted to make ^[[his home and take]] [[strikethrough]] her [[/strikethrough]] Alma as his bride & wife she refused. She did not want to live in the south, because of its prejudices.
