City's Leadership Join 100 Black Men To Honor Dr. Kenneth B. Clark

A power-laden cross section of the city and nation's most influential black and white leaders joined Friday night, February 23, to pay tribute to Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, pioneering social scientist whose works led to the historic 1954 school desegregation decisions, at a gala "brotherhood reception" sponsored by the 100 Black Men, Inc., and the New York Urban Coalition.

"His works and efforts have had a profound effect on our times in many walks of life," J. Bruce Llewellyn, President of the 100 Black Men, Inc., declared as he presented Dr. Clark with a silver memorial of the unique ocasion at the Advertising Club, 35th Street adn Park Avenue. His equally famous wife, Dr. Mamie Clark, joined him in the only speech of the occasion.

Joining in paying tribute to the famed Dr. Clark, President of the Metropolitan Applied Research Center, Inc., City College Professor and member of the New York State Board of Regents and active leader in numerous other causes, were such outstanding leaders as Roy Wilkins, Executive Director of the NAACP; Vernon Jordan, Executive Director, National Urban League; Dr. Robert C. Weaver, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; M. Carl Holman, President, National Urban Coalition; Dr. Eugene Callendar, President, New York Urban Coalition; Manhattan Borough President Percy E. Sutton; Rep. Charles B. Rangel, and O. T. Wells, President, National Bar Association.

From the business community were such prominent executives as George Spater, Chairman, American Airlines; Michael Burke, New York Yankees.

Also John J. McGillicuddy, President, Manufacturers Hanover Bank; Robert Boyd, President, Freedom National Bank; Sol Steinberg, President, Leasco Corp., Henry R. Smith, President, Chief Executive, Equitable Life Insurance Company; Walter W. Rothschild, retired president, A & S Stores; Walter Youngdale, Executive Vice President, IBM; Jacob Underhill, Vice President, New York Life Insurance Company; Nathaniel Gibbon, President, United Mutual Life Insurance Company; Clarence B. Jones, President, Amsterdam News; H. Carl McCall, President, WLIB; Robert Lehrman, Vice President, Con Edison; Harvey Russell, Vice President, PepsiCo; Paul Gibson, Vice President, American Airlines; Monte Irvin, Assistant to Baseball Commissioner; David H. Means, Assistant Vice Preident, and Mrs. Estelle Coleman, Assistant Secretary, New York Bank for Saving; Robert Moore, Vice President, General Electric; George Nelson, Warner Bros.; George Massua, ITT; Rick Willard, Atlantic Records.

From the field of education were such outstanding figures as Chancellor Robert Kibbee, of the City University; retired Columbia University Dean Dr. John Fisher; Dr. Ewart Guinier, Dean of Black Studies, Harvard University; Isiah R. Robinson, New York City Board of Education; Mrs. Joan Ganz Cooney, President, Children's Television Workshop; School Safety Director Eldridge Waithe; and Dr. Hylan Lewis, Brooklyn College.

New York City Police Commissioner Patrick Murphy and Deputy Commissioners William Smith and Benjamin Ward headed a list of prominent government officials which included Council Majority Leader Thomas Cuite, Customs Court Judge and Mrs. James L. Watson, Manpower Commissioner Lucille Rose, Mrs. Elinor Holmes Norton, Chairman, Commission on Human Rights; Supreme Court Justices O. D. Williams, Ivan Warner and Henry Bramwell; Corrections Commissioner Benjamin Malcolm; Civil Court Justice Fritz Alexander; Board of Elections Commissioners David Dinkins and William Larkin; State Senator Joseph Galiber, Assemblyman Samuel Wright and Thomas Fortune, Family Court Justice Edith Miller, Mental Health Commissioner Phyllis Harrison Ross, Commissioner Dorothy Orr, State Division on Human Rights; Roger Flood, former member of the City Housing Authority, and others.

Civic and community leaders included such persons as Mrs. Rose Morgan, James Dawdy, Harlem Commonwealth Council; former White House associate press secretary Andrew Hatcher; Cyril B. Tyson, Kenneth Drew, Publisher, New York Voice; William Grayson, Vice President, Johnson Publications; Bernard Jackson, Assistant to Football Commissioner; Mr. and Mrs. James Hicks; Mr. and Mrs. John Procope; Dr. David Barry, Miss Lorraine Hale, Hale House; Mr. and Mrs. James Booker; former Assemblyman Lloyd E. Dickens, Mrs. Salem Lewis; former Councilman Paul O'Dwyer; former Deputy Police Commissioner William L. Rowe; Mrs. Evelyn Cunningham, Assistant to Gov. Rockefeller; Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Burns, Mrs. Priscella Boyles; Commissioner Jay Swift, Mrs. Martha Lewis, Dr. Leroy Bowman, Dr. Leon McKinney, Major Robinson, Mrs. Jone Middleton, Dr. Stanley Nelson, Edward J. Babb, newscasters Mal Goode, Leon Lewis and Mrs. Jeri Warrick; Mrs. Mary Burke Nicholas, and hundreds of others.

Officers of the 100 Black Men in addition to Mr. Llewellyn include Mr. Dinkins, vice president; Deputy Commissioner Oscar Hogan, secretary; Nathaniel Gibbon, treasurer; Albert Gaines, assistant treasurer; Dr. Leon McKinney, financial secretary. Board members are Mr. Tyson, Hon. Herbert B. Evans, Rufu Shirter, Barnard Jackson and Edward Babb; Hon. James Watson, William J. Hart, Richard C. Kennard, Archibald Murray, Dr. Cecil Forster, Edolphus Townes, Hon. Charles Rangel, Eldridge Waithe, James L. Hicks, and Arthur Barnes.
