In Memoriam
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

One of the most warmly endorsed memorials honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Hall to be located on the campus of his Alma Mater, Morehouse College. It is most fitting, first, because it will be a magnificent structure, costing $1,750,000, standing majestically on a busy thoroughfare where countless thousands over the years will be reminded of how stalwartly Dr. King stood in the campaign for peace, love and justice. It is also most fitting because it is a structure which will be used by thousands of people each year. In this sense it will be a living memorial inspiring students in the Atlanta University Center as well as all other people in our West Side community.

When the Martin Luther King Memorial Auditorium was first announced as a part of the Morehouse College Second-Century Development Plan, contributions poured in from Atlanta and all sections of the country. Approximately one-fourth of its cost was quickly contributed. We are seeking a matching Federal grant of $875,000 which can be used in construction. This leaves a balance of only $450,000 to be raised. We believe if the black community will contribute $125,000 of this, we can secure the balance from gifts from Dr. King's friends and admirers in the white community.

Pledges toward this goal can be paid over a period of three years—1972, 1973, and 1974. They are fully tax deductible and can be on an annual, semi-annual or quarterly basis. We are seeking major gifts from our more affluent citizens in the range of $1,000 to $5,000, and we are seeking many other smaller pledges of one day's pay for each year for the next three years. Plaques will be placed in the Memorial Hall designating individuals who contribute from $500 to $999, and those of $1,000 and above.

WE NEED ONLY $450,000 TO BUILD THIS $1,750,000 STRUCTURE. Martin Luther King, Jr. never failed to respond when he could give of himself for us. Let us not hold back in contributing the remaining funds we need to build a memorial to a great and good man. Send your pledges and contributions to Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Morehouse College, 223 Chestnut Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30314.
