JOHN W. EDGHILL

John "Champ" Edghill is a sales executive and holds the position of Field Sales Manager with the American Tobacco Company, a division of American Brands, and has been in the employ of this company for 23 years.

Relating to fraternal connections, is a member of Mt. Pisgah Lodge No. 83 and also a member of the Long Island Consistory No. 61, Past Potentate of Abu Bekr Temple No. 91 and has served in the Imperial Council as the Deputy Public Relations Director and two years as the Imperial Convention Director.  He is also an Honorary Member of the following Temples: El Hasa, Cleveland, Ohio-Egyptian, Los Angeles, California - Golconda, Newark, New Jersey - Pyramid, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Muharram, Santa Monica, California - Medina, St. Louis, Mo. - Mecca, Washington, D.C.; was inducted into the Round Table of Commerce as one of the Black Outstanding Entrepreneurs of the New York Community, operating a very successful business under the name of Edghill's Showcase, Inc. and another under the name of Champ's Playroom, Inc. 

Has attended business conferences relating to Black Equal Opportunity and Job Employment with both Presidents Johnson and Kennedy. 

A graduate of West Coast University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  After graduation from college, he taught in the public schools of New York City, following which he was Youth Director for the YMCA and the Children's Aid Society of New York City. 

"Champ" was a former flyweight and bantamweight champion of the Golden Gloves, Diamond Belt and the A.A.U. Tournaments.  In his amateur boxing career, had 101 fights, losing 2.  As a professional boxer, had a colorful career of 88 professional fights, losing 1, with 12 draws and was rated the seventh leading welterweight contender by Ring Magazine during the years of 1940 and 1941.  

An avid fisherman and hunter and has won many awards in the striped bass 50 pound category, sponsored by the Schaefer Brewing Company.  In 1961, won Fisherman of the Year Award.  He is a Safety Instructor for the New York Conservation Department and Expert Rifleman for the N.R.A.  

He is Past Grand Lodge Officer of the Elks, holding the following positions: Past Assistant Grand Commissioner - Department of Veteran Affairs; Past Grand Traveling Deputy, Past Assistant Grand Director of Economics and Past Grand Director of Public Relations.  In 1963 received the Department of Veterans Affairs Achievement Award. 

He is married to the former Jean Catlin of Pittsburgh and has a daughter Jacqueline and a son John Edghill IV.
