FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
By any standard, Morehouse has a distinguished faculty. That 60 percent of its members hold doctorates is one fair measure of high quality. Even more significant is the dedication of these scholars to undergraduate teaching. The success of such efforts is clear from the attitude of students, whose chief concern is academic achievement. Some 20 percent of a typical class usually graduate cum laude or higher, and about 60 percent of each graduating class go on to further study in graduate and professional schools.

Holding gifted teachers in the face of attractive offers coming from wealthy institutions is a constant source of concern. In addition to higher salaries, more liberal benefits and greater opportunities for further study are available for teachers elsewhere. The demand of high-quality black professors has never been stronger.

To meet this challenge and to make it possible to attract other highly qualified scholars. Morehouse needs a faculty development fund. The College also needs endowed chairs, and only seven thus far have been established at Morehouse.
