Joey Mitchell Wins the Men's Singles for Third Year

Seventeen year old Joey Mitchell 3rd, the number one player on the Newton High School tennis team, won the men's singles championship for the third year in a row at the Oak Bluffs courts.

Young Mitchell, who will attend Stanford University this fall, never lost a game until he met the club's president, Hilton Davis Jr., in the semifinals. Each maintained the advantage while serving, the match being decided in a tie breaker game. Mitchell won with his accurate lob placements.

Mitchell then swept to victory as he bested Lew Downing in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Mitchell teamed with his 15-year old brother Mike in the men's doubles, but they were defeated in the finals by the more experienced Downing and his partner, Linc Pope.

In the mixed doubles, Bill Hayling and his wife Laura defeated the Turner family, Lincoln and Jane, 6-4, 6-3 to once again win the championship that was theirs four years ago.

Debra Shaw, who lost in last year's finals to Barbara Loatman, emerged victorious as she dropped the first set to Jan Cable, 6-3, then swept the next two, 6-1, 6-0.

Debra Shaw took her second trophy when she paired with Pat Downing to win the women's doubles, as they defeated Laura Hayling and Justine Smedback, 6-4, 7-5.

Linc Turner, chairman of the tournament, and his assistant, Mike Underwood, were pleased with the number of players and the caliber of play, with most matches being completed on time despite the intense heat.
