Black Classical Music?

Through the years there has been a remarkable gap in the recording of black composers.

In fact, it is a virtually untapped source of music, even though many worthy black composers have come and gone over the past two centuries.

In the first release of its Black Composers Series, Columbia Records, in a joint effort with the Afro-American Music Opportunities Association, has given black composers the quality of beautifully performed and recorded discs.

Conducted by Paul Freeman, the four initial discs are "absolutely stunning" according to Kenneth Furie in High Fidelity magazine.

Mr. Freeman has the Detroit Symphony and the London Symphony, as well as many noted soloists, performing the works.

The composers are Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-99), William Grant Still (born in 1895), Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), Ulysses Kay (born in 1817), George Walker (born in 1922) and Roque Cordero (born in 1917).

The Black Composers Series brings these people the attention they so richly deserve. And the opportunity for you to own their music.
