BETA EPSILON

Director Gertrude Walker showed great courage when she, with her committee, planned Beta Epsilon's TEACH-A-RAMA this year, and chose as its theme, "Pathways to Accountability in Education". Consideration of accountability in New York educational circles for the past several years had been lax. It was brought to the fore this spring when the Board of Education finally moved to adopt a tentative plan to be put into effect in New York City Schools.

A fruitful exploration of the subject took place at the Upper Manhattan Branch YWCA on Saturday, March 9. The meeting consisted of an audience-participation and panel discussion of the concept of accountability. This took place prior to two workshop sessions, one in math and one in reading. These sessions were conducted concurrently by Sorors Stovall (math) and Benson (reading).

The six-member panel was distinguished by the participation of 12 year old David Miles, a 7th year student at Intermediate School 155 Bronx, along with Mr. James Tuitt, Executive Director of the Mt. Vernon Boys Clubs; Mr. Philip Knox, Principal of C.S. 92 Manhattan; Soror Muriel Tuitt (Mrs. James Tuitt), Project Director for Title 111 ESEA of the Northeast Bronx Educational Park; Soror Lucille Stovall, Coordinator of Corrective Maths ESEA, Title 1, NPS at 141 Livingston Street, Board Of Education Headquarters; Soror Mary Able Benson, former Library Teacher, on sabbatical leave from Intermediate School 151 Bronx.

Following the workshops the meeting was reconvened and an evaluative discussion briefly ensued. It was the consensus that an expanded continuation meeting should take place as early as possible in the fall so as to benefit new and inexperienced teachers in the earlier stages of planning for the school year. Planning was begun in anticipation of this event in the fall.
