Rear Admiral Gerald Eustis Thomas

Gerald Eustis Thomas was born in Natick, Massachusetts, on June 23, 1929, son of Walter and Leila (Jacobs) Thomas). He graduated from Natick High School, attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, for one year and in 1951, received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Biochemical Sciences from  Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at Harvard, he was a member of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit and upon graduation was commissioned Ensign on June 1, 1951. He subsequently advanced in rank to that of Captain, to date from July 1, 1971. 

After receiving his commission in 1951, re joined the USS NEWMAN K. PERRY (DDR-883) and in October 1951 was assigned to the destroyer force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Engineering School, Newport, Rhode Island. In January 1952, re rejoined the NEWMAN K. PERRY and in July 1954 reported on board the USS WORCHESTER (CL-144). While attached to that cruiser, he attended the Combat Information Center Watch Officer and Day Air Control School, Boston, Massachusetts. He had instruction in the Russian Language at the Defense Language Institute, East Coast, Washington, D.C., from December 1956 to September 1957, wrere he qualified as a Russian interpreter, after which he served at the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Maryland.

In June 1960 he joined the USS LOWE (DER-325) as Executive Officer and in February 1962 assumed command of the USS IMPERVIOUS (MSO-449), which operated in the Western Pacific.

In August 1966 he assumed command of the USS BAUSELL (DD-845) and "for meritorious service . . . from March 31 to October 15, 1967 during combat operations against the enemy . . ." he was awarded the Navy Commendatin Medal with Combat "V".

Rear Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.

Samuel Lee Gravely, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia, on June 4, 1922, son of Samuel L. and Mary George (Simon) Gravely. He attended Armstrong High School in Richmond, and had three years at Virginia Union University. He was later graduated with the U.S. Naval Reserve on September 15, 1942. After recruit training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported in January 1943 as a student at the Service School, Hampton (Virginia) Institute and in May that year was assigned to the Section Base, San Diego, California. During the period November 1943 to July 1944 he was a member of the V-12 Unit at the University of California at Los Angeles, and then attended the Pre-Midshipmen School, Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Appointed Midshipman in the U.S. Naval Reserve in August 1944, he attended the Midshipmen School, Columbia University, New York City, and was graduated in December of that year. Commissioned Ensign, USNR, to date from December 14, 1944, he subsequently advanced in rank to that of Rear Admiral, to date from July 1, 1972, having transferred from U.S. Naval Reserve to the U.S. Navy on August 16, 1955.

He assumed command of Cruiser Destroyer Group Two in July 1973, and held that command until August 1975. He is currently the Commandant of the Eleventh Naval District, which is headquartered in San Diego, California, and includes Southern California and Arizona.

Captain Thomas David Parham, Jr.

Chaplain Parham was born on March 21, 1920 in Newport News, Va. He is the son of T. D. Parham, Sr. and Edith Seabrook Parham. His early education was in Durham, N.C., where he graduated valedictorian of his class at Hillside High School. Advanced education includes an A.B. degree, Magna Cum Laude, from North Carolina Central State University in 1941; S.T.M., Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1944, and M.Div. in 1969. He was the winner of the Hebrew prize for the best translation of the Book of Truth and the Sylvester Marvin Fellowship for Post Graduate Study awarded to the senior with the highest academic standing. Further study included N.C. Central Graduate School in education, University of Pittsburgh in psychology, University of Chicago in church history, University of California in counseling and human relations, and the University of Rhode Island in juvenile problems. He also has a certificate in marriage counseling from the Menninger Foundation of Topeka, Kansas, after 11 months of clinical training. Advanced degrees include D.D. from Ursinus College of Collegeville, Pa. in 1969; MA from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1972; and a Ph.D. in sociology from A.U. in 1973 .

His active duty as a Chaplain in the Navy includes December 1944 to August 1946 and again from January 1951 to the present. Various duty stations included during his first period of active duty include the Naval Training School in Hampton, Va., Naval Training Center and Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Ill., the Manana Barracks in Hawaii, the Naval Supply Center in Guam, and the Charleston Navy Yard.
