Imperial Potentate

83rd ANNUAL IMPERIAL COUNCIL SESSION
Los Angeles, California
August 15-21, 1976

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. ... Delegates, officers and members from some 350 Prince Hall shrine temples and courts will be represented at the 83rd annual imperial council session and the 65th annual meeting of the imperial court, Daughters of Isis, when the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine or North and South America and its jurisdiction, incorporated, Prince Hall Shriners, meet in the city of Los Angeles, California, August 15-21 of 1976.

Imperial Potentate Marshall S. Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Imperial Commandress Thelma M. Gordon of Huntington, West Va. said this week that pre-registration and hotels confirmation figures indicate that more than 50,000 delegates, along with members of their families, and visitors and guests will attend the week-long meeting.

Headquarters hotel[s] for shriners and daughters will be the Los Angeles Hilton for men and the Biltmore for women downtown. A spokesman said that the Prince Hall delegation will spend more than $5 millions during their seven-day stay.

Delegates to the annual session will come from cities and towns all over America and from other localities, worldwide, such as Alaska, the Bahama Islands, Belgium, Canada, England, Far East, Germany, Greece, Hawaii, Holland, Italy, Nassau, and Spain. The Los Angeles meeting could turn out to be one of the largest attended sessions ever in the history of the organization.

Imperial potentate Johnson, from Sahara Temple 2 in Pittsburgh, and Imperial Commandress Gordon, From Abdul Court 87 in Huntington, will preside over their respective sessions during the entire week. They will be assisted by a top-notch group of elected and appointed officers in the council and court to include Dr. L. L. Melton, deputy imperial po-tentate from Beaumont, Texas and Dt. Anita G. Adams, deputy imperial commanders from Tuskegee Institute, Ala.

Official hosts and hostesses for the meet in Los Angeles will be the officers and members of Egyptian Temple 5 and Egyptian Court 5. Officers in the two Prince Hall masonic bodies are already predicting that the 1976 convention in their city will be one of the largest ever held within recent years.

A reason advanced for this optimistic outlook is that Los Angeles is traditionally a great convention city filled with historical places and sights to be seen, and it has the type of entertainment offering that's always pleasing to the delegates, their families and visitors alike.

The Imperial Council of Shriners has formulated an extensive program of activities to keep everyone busy and happy during the week-long meeting. Two highlights of the Sunday's program will be the devine worship and memorial shrive, in honor of deceased members and the public program to be presented later in the day. At the public program the imperial potentate will present certificated of achievement and merit awards to national known black leaders of America, citing them for outstanding performance of duty and service to their community, city, state and nation.

Other programs and activities during the week will include the annual music festival; bowling and golf tournaments; daughters of Isis scholarship luncheon; imperial court egyptian and oriental teas; imperial court parade of stars and its fashion show; and the imperial potentate's ball.

Also to be seen will be marching and mounted patrols; drill contests and exhibition of precision marching; a motorcycle show; the Prince Hall Shrine talent and scholarship program; a salute to famous blacks of the past; and the student=aid scholarship banquet and program.

The mid-week highlight will be the grand parade through the downtown streets of the city of Los Angeles. Some 500 units and more than 5,000 persons are scheduled to participate in this mammoth three-mile long, four-hour parade.

One of the prettiest attractions to bee seen during the parade will be
