HAPPINESS, A SENSE OF DIRECTION
By Bill Shearer, Editor

It seems that when people have worked hard to educate themselves, fought the system to secure a reasonable mid-range position and all the rest of the professional and personal struggles, some degree of happiness is deserved. Why then do we find so many people unhappy so often. Let's consider this question in detail.
I've often asked many persons who appeared to be unhappy, "What is happiness to them?" The answer given so often is a nice home, nice family, 2 cars in the driveway, money in the bank, etc." Everyone of us know many persons who fit into that descriptive category of having to aforementioned material things, yet who are unhappy. That certainly tells us that there must be more to "happiness" than material things.
My life's experiences have shown that the mistake any persons allow themselves to make is too seek or expect happiness on a permanent or ongoing basis. I would suggest that happiness comes in flighting patterns, never consistent. Death, sickness, depression, loneliness, joy, sorrow, and all the other elements we experience are all realistic aspects of life that each person will experience to some degree if we live long enough. These are the same elements that will routinely disrupt our search for happiness on a permanent basis.
If any of us were going to take a trip across country by automobile, and we agreed that the car was in excellent shape, the question I would ask is what is one of the first things you would do in preparation for this automobile trip. The majority of persons I suspect would suggest that they would go to a service station or the Automobile Club and secure a road map. It's amazing how we feel the need for a road map. It's amazing how we feel the need for a road map for the shortest or longest trip and yet we don't have a road map for our lives.
What does a road map really show us.
Well, it gives us the distance in miles or meters that lies ahead. It shows us
