George Palmer came to work for the New York Amsterdam News in 1939. While traveling through Harlem he saw many children with nothing to do during the summers, and his idea of sending these children to camp began to grow and take shape.

In 1949 he founded the Monday Night Camp Fund and through his efforts and the help of hi good wife, Mrs. Clarice Palmer, and his committee, he fulfilled his dreams.

By 1976 thousands of children had been sent to camp through the efforts of George Palmer.

The Amsterdam News is honoring the memory of George Palmer by changing the name of the Camp Fund to the George Palmer Memorial Camp Fund and we will continue the struggle started by Mr. Palmer some 27 years ago.
