JAMES PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH West 141st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue New York City, New York Clilan Bethany Powell was born on August 8, 1894 in Suffolk, Virginia to Everett and Eliza Powell. He graduated from Virginia Normal College in 1913. He went on to Howard University where he earned his medical degree in 1920. He established his practice as the first Black X-Ray Specialist in New York State in 1922. Dr. Powell helped organize and became president of the Victory Mutual Insurance Company and many other businesses. In 1936 with Dr. P. M. Savory as his partner, they purchased the bankrupt Amsterdam News. In a few years it became the largest Black weekly in the country. In 1954 Dr. Powell founded and established the 48
