CLIFFORD L. ALEXANDER, JR.
Secretary of the Army

Mr. Alexander was sworn in as the Secretary of the Army on 14 February 1977.  Subject to the direction and control of the President as Commander-in-Chief and the Secretary of the Defense, he has responsibility and authority for the conduct of all affairs of the Department of the Army.

Born September 21, 1933, in New York City, Mr. Alexander received his A.B. degree in American Government, cum laude, from Harvard University in 1955.   He received his LL.B degree from Yale University Law School in 1958.

Following his graduation from Law School, Mr. Alexander enlisted in the 569th Field Artillery Battalion, New York National Guard, and was called to active duty for six (6) months.  He was separated from the active Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in February 1959.  Mr. Alexander is a great inspiration to the Youth of Harlem.  In his early years, he was a member of the Harlem Branch YMCA and served as a counselor in the Youth Department during his development in the Harlem community.

From 1959 to 1961, he served as Assistant District Attorney for New York County, leaving that office to become Executive Director of the Manhattanville Hamilton Grange Neighborhood Conservation Project.  Mr. Alexander was then named Program and Executive Director of Harlem Youth Opportunities.

In 1963, he was called to the White House by President Kennedy to serve as Foreign Affairs Officer of the National Security Council.  From 1964 through 1967, President Johnson appointed him--successively--Deputy Special Assistant to the President, Associate Special Counsel, and Deputy Special Counsel to the President.

Mr. Alexander was Chairman of the EEOC during the period 1967 through 1969.  In September, 1968, Mr. Alexander served as special representative of the President, with the rank of Ambassador, heading the United States Delegation marking the independence of the Kingdom of Swaziland.

In addition, he served as Special Consultant to President Johnson on Civil Rights.  he was a partner in the law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Alexander until his oppointment as Secretary of the Army.

Mr. Alexander married the former Adele Logan of New York in July 1959.  They have two (2) children--Elizabeth, 14 and Mark, 12.
