Dr. Scott spoke on the need to encourage and support research that would provide better methods of treatment and afford a clearer understanding of the effect of this disease on the health and life style of one out of every 600 Black Americans, who suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. He noted that "one out of 12 American Blacks carry the Sickle Cell Trait, which can be inherited by their children. If a child inherits the sickling trait gene from both parents, sickle cell anemia will result."
