Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity

From the charter group of twelve Howard University students who met on that campus on January 9, 1914, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity has grown in include over 50,000 men in some 300 chapters throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, the Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean. The first slate of officers included the three founders A. Langston Taylor, C. I. Brown, and L. F. Morse as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer, respectively. The Howard University Board of Deans formally recognized the new fraternity on April 15, 1914 and, on May 4th of that year, Phi Beta Sigma held its first initiation. 

The 1920's were especially productive for Phi Beta Sigma; it was during that decade that the fraternity began publication of its official organ, "The Crescent"; established its scholarship fund; chartered its Distinguished Service Chapter; created the important office of Field Secretary, and launched its [[bold type]] Bigger and Better Business movement [[//bold type]] - all milestones in the fraternity's 62-year history. 

The [[bold type]] Bigger and Better Business [[//bold type]] program began at the December, 1924 conclave as a series of forums to further acquaint delegates with some of the problems confronting Black businessmen. The forums were so successful that the fraternity voted to include them in the National Public Program.

Phi Beta Sigma's contribution to the education of Black youth, takes the form of sponsorship of scholarships, tutoring services and educational and cultural programs such
