New Agency in town

NEW BLACK-OWNED AFFILIATE OF THE INTERPUBLIC GROUP ANNOUNCED

Formation of a new Black-owned advertising agency affiliated with The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., was announced today.

The new agency is Mingo, Jones, Guilmenot, Inc. Its principals are Frank L. Mingo, Caroline R. Jones and Richard A. Guilmenot, III.

Paul Foley, chairman and president of the Interpublic Group, the world's largest advertising and marketing communications company, announced the launching of the independent and privately-owned agency at a press conference at the Interpublic Group headquarters.

"These three principals are proven advertising professionals, bringing more than 32 years of general and Black consumer marketing expertise to their new company," he said. 

Mr. Mingo, who is president of the agency, had been a vice president and management supervisor at McCann-Erickson Inc. Earlier, he was a senior account executive at J. Walter Thompson.

Ms. Jones, a well-known copy writer is vice president and creative director. She was a vice president and a creative supervisor at BBDO.

Mr. Guilmenot is vice president and director of client services. He was a vice president and account supervisor at BBDO. Earlier, he was an account executive at Ted Bates.

Mr. Foley pointed out that the Interpublic Group will handle media payments for Mingo, Jones and Guilmenot, Inc. in the same way that it processes payments for all the Interpublic agencies.

"Similarly, we will provide other management services such as accounting and billing facilities," Mr. Foley said.

Frank Mingo said: "I want to thank Mr. Foley and Carl Spielvogel, vice chairman-operations of Interpublic for their extensive involvement in helping the principals establish the new agency."

The agency begins operations with an assignment from the Miller Brewing Company.

Stressing the agency's ties with the Black community, Mr. Mingo pointed out that the Black-owned Freedom National Bank had been selected as the bank for Mingo, Jones and Guilmenot, Inc.

Mr. Mingo, when he was a [[at]] McCann-Erickson, was involved in the introduction of Lite Beer from Miller, the most successful new product in beer business history.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Mr. Mingo received his master's degree from Northwestern, where he later lectured in advertising at the Medill School of Journalism.

Among his credits, he received the 1974 H. K. McCann Award for outstanding account service and McCann's 1976 Robert E. Healy Award for outstanding contribution to a client's business.

A native Chicagoan, Mr. Mingo was senior account executive at J. Walter Thompson and manager of market development for Field Enterprises. He served as president of the Black Advertising Group and for 2 1/2 years was coordinator of the 4A's Basic Advertising Course.

Ms. Jones is vice president and creative director and noted advertising copywriter. Ms. Jones was the first Black female vice president of a major agency and one of less than five in U.S. corporate business.

Her account assignments have been varied, from TV to filmstrips, including Burger King, Campbell Soup, Rums of Puerto Rico, Bowery Savings Bank, and Polaroid. Her National Center for Voluntary Action campaign was the most widely-viewed public service campaign in advertising history.

During her career, Ms. Jones has received numerous acknowledgments, including Clio and Anny awards, 1970 election to Foremost Women in Communications, inclusion in the "Living Legends in Black" Bicentennial exhibit. In 1976 she was voted one of the "100 Outstanding Creative People in America."

Richard A. Guilmenot, III is vice president and director of client services. A graduate of Fisk University, he received his MBA at Northwestern.

His client responsibilities at BBDO included Pine Sol and new products for American Cynamid [[Cyanamid]] and Gillette's Right Guard deodorants and anti-perspirants. Prior to that, he was an account executive at Ted Bates, handling Colgate Dental Creme, Palmolive Rapid Shave, Hour After Hour and new products.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Guilmenot was featured in an MBA magazine interview, "The Vanguard Generation Moves Up...Fast Tracking On Merit" and in 1976 received the YWCA Black Achievers Award. He has been an active spokesman for advertising as a career, speaking at a number of universities, including Northwestern, Columbia, Rutgers and Atlanta U.

The new agency's permanent address will be 485 Lexington. It is temporarily located at 501 Fifth Avenue, 3rd Floor.

Describing the new company, Mr. Mingo said: "We are proud to bring a new level of professionalism to the industry. And, we are optimistic because we understand who we are and where we've come from. As of today, Mingo, Jones, Guilmenot, Inc. is open for business. Our specialty is Advertising. With a capital A."
