The Seagram Vanguard Society was chartered in 1952 and began functioning the following year. The official aim of the Society is to "encourage, foster, and perpetuate outstanding achievements on behalf of Negroes in the fields of: athletic endeavor, community service, cultural development, economic improvement, fraternal brotherhood, notable journalism, and progressive education."

To help achieve its purposes, the Society presents annual Distinguished Leadership Awards to individuals selected by committees representing selected organizations. These awards are in the form of handsome trophies.

Among the organizations that aid in selecting recipients of the annual awards are the National Urban League, the Elks, the National Bowling Association, and the United Golfers Association. In addition, special awards are granted when the occasion arises to any individual whose activities have been deemed outstanding on behalf of the Negro community by the Society's Awards Committee.

In the nineteen-year period that the Vanguard Society has been active, over 74 awards have been made including special trophies presented to such outstanding leaders as the Honorable Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Mary Church Terell, Earle Hyman, Louis Peterson, the Errol Garner Trio, Corneal A. Davis, Dr. John Robinson and others.
