The Schomburg Center, one of four Research Centers of The New York Public Library, is devoted exclusively to collecting, preserving and making available materials which document black culture. In 1972 a grant from the Federal government established the Schomburg Conservation and Preservation Project to preserve this unparalleled archive of black culture. In addition to three grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Schomburg Center has received grants from the State of New York and the Ford Foundation. "Treasures Restored" dramatically illustrates the scope of this crucial project and the varied techniques used to insure the survival of the collections.

The new building for the Schomburg Center will provide a controlled environment for the preservation of these collections. Construction was started in April 1977.
