[[caption]] Melba Moore — Became the first Black artist to be featured in a one-woman concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center in 1976. Singer and actress, she has performed on Broadway in "Hair" and she won the Tony, Drama Desk, and Theatre World Awards for her performance in "Purlie". Ms. Moore's television credits include all the major talk shows, and she has recorded three very successful albums. She is currently preparing to star in the upcoming Broadway show Timbuktu.[[/caption]]

Literature Award

[[caption]] Alice Walker — A poet, novelist, short story writer, essayist, biographer and a consulting and contributing editor of Ms magazine, and of Freedomways, a quarterly journal of the Black Freedom Movement, her books include Meridian and The Third Life of Grange Copeland. Ms. Walker's literary awards include a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction for 1977-78. She was among the first group of North American Cultural workers to visit Cuba since the revolution. [[/caption]]

Sports Award

[[caption]] Arthur Ashe — A winner of the prestigious Wimbledon singles title and the World Championship Tennis title, has several times been ranked the number one tennis player in the world. Mr. Ashe supports various Black organizations such as the United Negro College Fund and the African Student Aid Fund through personal appearances as well as financial contributions. His public campaign against South Africa brought a great deal of world-wide attention to the plight of the Blacks in that country. [[/caption]]

Theatre Award

[[caption]] Rosetta Le Noire — is the founding mother of Amas Repertory Theatre, one of the most prestigious Workshop Showcase Theatres in New York City. As Artistic Director of Amas, Ms. Le Noire conceived "Bubbling Brown Sugar". After its premiere at Amas, "Bubbling" went on to become a huge Broadway success. "Bojangles", another product of Amas, is expected to open on Broadway in 1978. Also a talented actress, Ms. Le Noire's Broadway credits include "The Sunshine Boys" and "Streetcar Named Desire". Her appearance in television commercials and series are numerous. [[/caption]]
