Venable Fuel Corporation Expands

A sizable Brooklyn-based fuel oil distributor aided by ICBO has trebled in gross sales since ownership of the firm passed in 1974 to two minority women.

Venable Fuel Corporation, with offices in a building owned by the company at 1405 Fulton Street, Bedford-Stuyvesant, is headed by Cordelia Venable Fuller, President, and her sister, Vice President Evelyn McCoy. A third management team member is Alfred J. Reed, Comptroller. One of Mrs. Fuller's sons, and one of Mrs. McCoy's sons, have recently joined the business full-time.

The firm was established in 1946 as a coal supplier by Spencer Venable, the present owners' father. The sisters took ownership and management after his death in 1974.

At that time, Venable Fuel was grossing about $1.2 million. Contracts now in hand assure 1979 sales of approximately $3.5 million.

"Like so many small business owners," said President Cordelia Fuller, "our father carried his business plans in his head. When my sister and I took over in 1974, coming from other fields entirely, we had no knowledge at all of how to run a business.

"Without the help of ICBO's Lou Johnson [Acting Executive Director, ICBO of New York] and other minority assistance efforts, I feel sure we would not be in business today—or if so, then on a far smaller scale."
